We’re just one day away from Week 1 of preseason football, where the Green Bay Packers come to town to take on the Cleveland Browns. While Packers QB Jordan Love will take the field, he’s only expected to play about 10 snaps. The Browns, on the other hand, will start Winston, with Deshaun Watson sitting this one out. After Winston, Tyler Huntley and Dorian Thompson-Robinson (DTR) will split the reps, and Browns fans should stay locked in, because the QB battle is definitely heating up.
The Browns currently have four QBs on the depth chart, and it’s unlikely they’ll go into the regular season with that many. This means either Huntley or DTR could be traded or cut, with hopes of landing on the practice squad. Tyler Huntley could be an interesting trade piece, given that backup QBs are in high demand after last year’s injuries.
But QB isn’t the only position to watch. The Browns have eight wide receivers on the roster, all talented, and someone is going to be the odd man out. My eyes will be glued to Jaelon Darden, who has been a standout in camp this year. Watching him move with and without the ball is a thing of beauty—this man is FAST and EXPLOSIVE! With names like Amari Cooper, Elijah Moore, Cedric Tillman, David Bell, and Michael Woods II, Darden is making a strong case to secure a spot on the team.
There’s also buzz around rookie Jamahri Thrash and the 6'4" Matt Landers, another speedy and physical player making plays in camp. Last year, Austin Watkins captured the fans’ attention but still ended up on the practice squad, and with limited roster spots, we might see a similar situation this year.
The offensive line is another area to keep an eye on as Jedrick Wills and Jack Conklin work their way back from injury. It’ll be interesting to see how the line holds up, especially after losing their biggest asset, Coach Bill Callahan, this offseason.
On the defensive side, my #1 target is Mike Hall Jr. He’s making waves in camp and earning respect from veterans, with Za'Darius Smith even saying he reminds him of Aaron Donald because of his quickness. That’s high praise for someone who hasn’t taken a snap in the NFL yet, so I’m expecting to see some big plays from him.
Football is officially here, Browns fans, so buckle up for what’s sure to be an amazing season!
